What is an ADSL line ?  It’s a digital subscriber line (DSL) which offers data communication technology . This kind of line enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voice modem can provide. It does this by utilizing frequencies that are not used by a voice actual old fashioned telephone call.  A splitter, or DSL filter, allows a single telephone connection to be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time.

At the telephone exchange the line generally terminates at a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) where another frequency splitter separates the voice band signal for the conventional type of network used for voice.  Data carried by the ADSL are typically routed over Telkom’s data network and eventually reach a conventional Internet Protocol network.

Providers like Telkom usually market ADSL as a service for consumers to provide  internet . ADSL is in many places the most common type offered to home users.

You will need the following to get online at speeds which enable you to browse,  e-mail, do social networking like Facebook and download files and entertainment… or play games !

 

  • A computer capable of using ADSL. Your computer must have a network adapter with an ethernet port, and must be running Windows XP or later (or an equivalent OS).
  • A DSL modem/router. If you have a DSL modem, you should be able to use it with Imaginet’s services, and you will not need to purchase a new one. We can simply help you reconfigure your existing modem over the phone. If you do not have a modem, Imaginet can provide one for you.
  • An active post-paid Telkom phone line. You must have a phone line in order to use ADSL, and your normal phone line rental remains payable to Telkom, even if you never make phone calls, and even if you pay your DSL line rental to Imaginet.
  • A DSL line. Telkom can install DSL on an active Telkom phone line. If you don’t have a DSL line, Imaginet can have one installed for you via Telkom, or you can contact Telkom yourself on 10210 and order the installation of ADSL. If Imaginet installs your line, you will pay us your monthly DSL rental. If Telkom installs the DSL, you will pay them. All this information can be found on Imaginet’s website for support.
